Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No.1

Segment: Young adult readers aged 8-18 years old (depending on maturity level)

I spoke to three individuals who fell under this criteria and one said that she was desperately in need of a new read because Netflix just doesn't fill the void for her and visual-adaptations make her angry because she'd much rather imagine the plot unfolding in her mind from her own interpretation of words. Another agreed, saying that it's been so long since anything on the shelves have caught his eye. The last reader I spoke to said that she's tired of rereading her old favorites for nostalgia's sake and would love to see something that features a more diverse ensemble of cast portrayed in the story. Representation matters, folks.

As for information search, one buyer simply strolls between isles looking for new reads (not much a fan for the mainstream front-of-the-store-with-the-big-cardboard-display-around-its-own-shelf types), but this takes a long time. The other just looks to social media or what friends suggest, but mostly from whatever talk that spreads like wildfire around the internet of the next hype-to-be. The third, if she's really bored, actually goes out of her way to Google bestsellers and read the reviews.

Based on my interviews, I see the need is out there and that getting word out is imperative to reach my designated audience. Being a digital era makes it sound easy to be discovered, but also makes it easier to get flooded with competition of a hundred others just to compete against the huge corporations that make sure nobody's attention wanders from them. The need-awareness from my segment is there, and so is their ambition in information search; now I just have to reach them.
